Oberon

“That’s no way to greet an old friend, Raith.” Keanu pulls me in for a hug, but I rebuff him, my body rigid with shock. “And who is this?” he asks, looking down the mask’s beak at Olivia.

Absolutely fucking not.

I search for his tether, finding it quickly. He always tried to hide it from me but could never quite manage it. I grab hold and shove him backward, hard enough to send a normal man flying. But Keanu is no ordinary man.

He takes a singular step back, unperturbed.

“You look familiar, dove,” Keanu drones, cocking his head, and I know he’s trying to compel her. Thank god for the tourmaline in the choker. He could override it if he really wanted to, but I doubt he’ll go to the trouble.

“We were just leaving,” I snap, moving to block her from his sight.

“Pity—” he starts, but I’m already dragging Olivia away. “I’ll see you soon,” I hear him call, his bone-chilling laughter reaching us over the throngs of people as if carried by the smoke.

“What was that about?” Olivia asks, allowing herself to be dragged behind me.

I don’t respond, focused on getting us out of the crowd and back to my house so he doesn’t track us to where she lives, assuming he hasn’t already.

“Oberon!” She rips her hand out of my grasp and I whirl around. “What the hell was that?”

“I’ll explain later, please, let me get you out of here—”

“Oberon?” a voice calls from behind me.

I grab Olivia and yank her behind me, but relax a little when I realize it isn’t Keanu.

“Gideon,” I huff. My brother stands a few feet from us, dressed in all black. Confetti litters his shoulders and hair, red lipstick smeared on his neck and exposed chest.

“Gideon?” Olivia echoes, peeking out from behind me.

“Ah, this must be Olivia!” Gideon grins, coming closer and extending a hand to her, Rolex glittering under the lights.

“Yes, it’s a pleasure to meet you, Gideon,” she steps out from behind me and takes his hand, which he brings to his lips to kiss her knuckles. If he’s surprised by her appearance, he hides it well.

“The pleasure is all mine,” he hums, eyes roaming her body openly.

“Gideon,” I snarl in warning, and he looks up, grinning like a devil. “A word?” I drag him a few feet away and refrain from slapping him.

“Well, that’s interesting, brother.” He smiles, raising an eyebrow at me.

“Not now. Keanu is here.”

His gray eyes go wide. “You saw him?”

“He saw us.”

“Ah.” He rubs his goatee. “That’s not good.”

“No, so I need to take her home.”

“I wouldn’t.” He pulls out a black flask, takes a swig, and then offers it to me. “He’s not going to like that his competition was reincarnated.”

“You don’t think I know that?” I take a deep swig, gin burning the back of my throat. “Make sure we aren’t followed.” I shove the flask into his hand and turn back to Olivia, who’s waiting impatiently with her arms crossed over her chest.

“I’ll explain later, baby.
